The Versatile Delight of Chicken Fried Rice
Chicken fried rice is a favorite dish among foodies and home cooks alike. Originally from Asian cuisine, this versatile comfort food has found its way into kitchens worldwide. Today, we enjoy many variations of chicken fried rice, each adapted to suit local tastes.
One of the reasons people adore fried rice is its simplicity. It allows for endless customization, catering to diverse taste preferences and dietary needs. You can toss in veggies, different meats, seafood, or even tofu, making it a versatile dish for any meal. Plus, it’s a fantastic way to use up leftover rice and other ingredients, helping to cut down on food waste.
Customizing Your Fried Rice
When customizing the Indian Chicken Fried Rice, I’ve included as many vegetables as possible, but you don’t need to follow this strictly. Feel free to omit any listed ingredients and add others like leeks, zucchini, broccoli, cauliflower, and mushrooms. For a vegetarian version, you can replace the chicken with tofu. Simply fry the tofu in a little oil before adding it to the rice. Alternatively, use soya chunks by boiling them, squeezing out the excess water, and frying them lightly before mixing them into the fried rice.
Tips for Perfect Indian Chicken Fried Rice
- Day-old or leftover rice is ideal for making fried rice because the grains have dried slightly, preventing them from clumping and becoming mushy during frying. However, if you don’t have any on hand, you can cook fresh rice and still make delicious Indian chicken fried rice.
- In this recipe, I went with 2 cups of basmati rice. Before cooking, I soaked the rice for just about 10 minutes to keep it nice and firm for the fried rice.
- For the water-to-rice ratio, I used 1 1/4 cups of water for every cup of basmati rice, which helps get that grainy, long texture without breaking.
- I also tossed in 1/2 tsp of salt while cooking the rice. To keep things simple, I used a rice cooker. After it was done, I let the rice cool and popped it in the fridge at least for an hour to prep it ahead of time, which is key for getting that perfect fried rice texture without breaking.
Healthier Homemade Chicken Fried Rice
In this recipe, I went with basmati rice for a lower GI and healthier choice compared to the usual jasmine rice used for fried rice. But if you want an even healthier option, you can try brown rice, quinoa, or even cauliflower rice if you’re on a low-carb diet. Just check the package for cooking instructions for the rice or quinoa, and then whip up your fried rice with it.
